Commissioner Todd Staples launched the Good Grades Start with Good Nutrition’ campaign to encourage parents and students to take advantage of the healthy and affordable meals served at Texas schools. .
More than 35 percent of Texas children are considered overweight or obese. That number is higher than the nation as a whole. Commissioner Staples says schools are in a powerful position to influence what kids are eating. Nutrition guidelines are designed to make sure what is being served in school cafeterias for breakfast and lunch is healthier than it has been.
For instance, school lunches can have no more than 30 percent of calories from fat and less than 10 percent from saturated fat. School lunches must also provide one-third of the recommended allowances of protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, calcium, and calories.more
