State officials emphasized that the report does not address whether the policies are carried out.

‘I”m pleased certainly with the results,’ said Sue Levasseur, Danbury”s coordinator of health services. ‘There definitely is room for improvement. We are striving for better nutrition and better education. It”s a collaborative effort.’

Danbury”s best score was a 100 for its comprehensiveness in communication and a 92 for both comprehensiveness and strength of its school meal policy.

Its weakest scores were in physical education policies, since the district does not address how much time students should take physical education at any grade level.more

Regionwide consultations on hunger mitigation, good nutrition kick off.
Regional Nutrition Coordinator Nona B. tad-y said the region wide consultations is pat of the Accelerated Hunger Mitigation Program (AHMP) of the Arroyo administration, where region VI provinces were identified under Priority 2 and Priority 3 packages.

The series of advocacy meetings will be held starting September 23 in the province of Antique, September 25 in Negros Occidental/Bacolod City, September 29 in Aklan, October 1 in Capiz and October 3, Iloilo.

Tad-y said the participants in these meetings will be oriented on the nutrition and hunger situation in the country and in their province, the AHMP. Particularly on the Promotion of Good Nutrition component, Updated Medium Term Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition and the Infant and Young Nutrition Global Strategy.

The one-day activity is aimed to generate commitment from the local leaders and stake holders for full implementation of their respective Hunger Mitigation Plan of Action, specifically by reactivating and/or strengthening their nutrition action committees, mobilizing funds, and promoting counterparting strategy in effectively implementing their support activities.more

Oregon PTA Announces National PTA Healthy Lifestyles Award Winners.

National PTA received Healthy Lifestyles Awards applications from 474 PTAs nationwide, representing 47 states. Butler Creek PTA and Memorial PTA were two of 22 PTAs receiving Healthy Lifestyles Awards; a total of ten PTAs in Oregon applied for the award. Criteria for the Healthy Lifestyles Award programs were those that:

Promoted healthy lifestyles in the home, school, and community;
Promoted family involvement in the school;
Emphasized the connection between healthy lifestyles and student achievement; and
Engaged a diverse group of family and community members.more

Nutrition labels required on most foods are an important tool for determining the right choices among a daunting array of sometimes deceiving options.

‘The beauty of a nutrition label is in comparison,’ said Karen Massey, who specializes in nutrition and consumer issues at the Routt County Extension office.

Ironically, many consumers get caught up in bold nutrition claims on the front of packages, rather than the Nutritional Facts on the back, she said.

Although regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, claims such as low fat, low sugar and wholegrain may mislead consumers into thinking the product is a healthy choice for their nutritional needs.

A product that is labeled low in fat, for example, may not be low in calories because of added sugar.more

Glass says he was particularly impressed with the districts Food and Nutrition Services operations and programs after a visit to the Creekside Intermediate cafeteria.

‘Even the way they”re named, “Food and Nutrition,” impressed me,’ he said. ‘The food quality is outstanding. And we”re doing it all in-house. It”s our own program. Other districts have struggled to get to the level that Dexter”s at as far as quality of food and nutrition.’

Glass says the folks in that department, and many others, ‘just light up when they see you.’

That”s the kind of thing that has gotten him excited about the district.

Glass expects to have a good grasp in time for the next administrative meeting, he said after running down his ‘to-meet’ list.

He also discussed what he had heard about the Student Produced Artistic Collaborative Events (SPACE) program and the ‘Battle of the Bands’ that Deb Marsh”s group puts on.more

American Cancer Society Celebrates Signature of Menu Labeling.

With the signing of SB 1420, California will be the first state in the country to require chain restaurants to provide the number of calories for standard items on menus and order boards.

The American Cancer Society, a co-sponsor of the bill, joined the effort because one in three cancer deaths may be related to poor nutrition, obesity, and physical activity. Helping people with their dining choices at restaurants has become more crucial as restaurants become an increasingly important component of people”s diets.
